Pastor Josh's Parody on Prejudice

At Youth Group on Wednesday Josh taught on the issue of prejudice. Some don't realize that the Bible has a lot to say about such contemporary issues! Back in the Old Testament book of Numbers Chapter 12 verses 1-10 tells the whole story of how Miriam and Aaron were prejudice against Moses' wife and how God dealt with them. Josh ended the night with a parody to the tune of American Pie and the teens LOVED it!! They went nuts screaming and yelling at the end, but we didn't get that on the video! Enjoy these short clips!

Here are the entire lyrics in case you wanted to know:

A long, long time ago on his way to Canaan,
Moses wed a dark skinned Cushite lass.
His siblings, questioning his choice, spoke out against him in one voice:
"Our brother's days of leadership have passed."

So Aaron said, "God made me priest, in charge of sacrifice and feast.
With all the rights that he's go. He isn't such a big shot."
And miriam with tambourine, thought she was a worship queen.
"If he's to lead and to inspire,
He needs me and my choir."

They started singing,

Chorus:
"So bye, bye to our brother Mo's bride."
Now Miriam and Aaron--what they did wasn't bright.
Don't you judge someone 'cause their skin isn't right,
'Cause you foolishly sin in God's sight.
You foolishly sin in God's sight.

God called to all three and so, Aaron and Miriam and Mo,
Gathered in the Meeting Tent.
The Lord came down in a great big cloud, and spoke his Holy words aloud,
And this is how the conference went:

"Well your prejudice is hard to take. Judging Moses' wife is a big mistake.
You're really out of place. I speak to Moses face to face."
And from God's words the siblings knew, they had to learn a thing or two,
About folks different from me and you, and what they mean to God.

And they stopped singing,

(CHORUS)

Now in a flash the meeting's done, and who could doubt the Lord had won,
Seeing Miriam's face to white?
Aaron cried, "I see it's a sin, because God makes a person's skin,
Whatever shade He thinks is right."

Our God we ask to be aquitted, of the hateful sin that we've committed.
Forgive our foolish pride, we want to be on your side!
We know that prejudice is more than rude. It's such a stinky attitude,
'Cause You want to call a multitude, from every nation and tribe...

Who won't be singing,

(Chorus)
